New Tie-Breaking Policy of JEE Mains 2025

If two or more candidates obtain the same number of total marks the following order is followed to award the ranks for each of them:

• The candidate with the highest marks in Mathematics is awarded the rank first, Followed by,
• Candidate with highest marks in physics, followed by,
• Candidate with highest marks in chemistry. If the tie still persists,
• Incorrect to correct ratio of questions in the subjects in the following order Maths, Physics, Chemistry is considered.
• Age will be considered in case of tie in all the above factors and the older candidate is awarded the rank.
• In case of the tie, both will be awarded the same rank.

The new rules emphasize the importance of Mathematics, making it the top priority for students. Scoring well in Mathematics can significantly improve rankings, particularly in tie-breaking cases. Aspirants should focus on mastering concepts, enhancing problem-solving skills, and improving accuracy and speed to excel in this subject.

• All-rounded preparation: While the preference is given to Mathematics, the other two subjects i.e. physics and chemistry are given equal importance. In case of the tie in mathematics, subjects like physics and chemistry will decide your rank. So it is important to give equal importance to each subject.

• Fair Ranking System: The new system streamlines the ranking process, removing uncertainty around tie-breaking. With clear and structured rules based on academic performance, candidates can focus on their preparation, ensuring fairness in the competition.

• Advantage for Older Aspirants: Older applicants receive a slight advantage if subject scores don’t resolve a tie. While this factor may not impact most candidates, it underscores the importance of achieving high marks overall, as relying on age is not a viable strategy.

Tips to Avoid a Tie Break and Score High in JEE Mains 2025

Considering the humungous competition of the exam it is advised to avoid the tie break and here are some tips that you can follow to gain a slighter advantage: 

• Priorotize Mathematics: Give enough time to practice mathematics and master the subject. Identify your weak areas and solve multiple questions to achieve a score you set for yourself.

• Give time for other subjects: Although mathematics should be given priority, you should also focus on the other two subjects as they decide your rank in case of a tie in the mathematics subject.

• Focus on Accuracy and Conceptual Understanding: Scoring high across all subjects requires precision and clarity in concepts.
• Stay Informed: Knowing the rules and planning accordingly gives applicants a clear advantage.
